Accessibility
This site should work for everyone in Ward 1
Our commitment
Representation that begins with listening has to be reachable by everyone. This site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard referenced by Ontario’s accessibility legislation. Where we fall short, we want to know.
What we have done
These are specific, tested properties of this site rather than general intentions:
- Every colour combination used for text has been measured against WCAG AA. The lowest ratio on the site is 5.1:1, against a required 4.5:1 for body text.
- Every form field has a visible, permanently associated label — not a placeholder that vanishes when you type.
- The whole site can be operated by keyboard, and the focus outline is clearly visible.
- A “skip to content” link is the first thing a keyboard or screen-reader user reaches.
- Headings run in a logical order, so screen-reader users can navigate by structure.
- Images carry alternative text, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Nothing moves, flashes or plays automatically.
- Text reflows without horizontal scrolling down to a 320-pixel-wide screen.
- Required form fields are marked in text as well as colour.
Known limitations
We would rather name these than let you discover them:
- Error messages and confirmations on the forms have not yet been tested with assistive technology.
- The campaign video on the Updates & Events page does not yet have accurate captions. YouTube’s automatic captions are not an acceptable substitute. Adding proper captions is outstanding, and we would rather say so than leave you to find out.
- Links to official City of Oshawa and Durham Region pages lead to sites we do not control and whose accessibility we cannot guarantee.
- This site has not yet been tested with a screen reader by a person who uses one daily. Automated checks are not a substitute for that.
Alternative formats
If anything on this site is difficult to use, we will provide the information another way — large print, plain text, by phone, or in person. Just ask.
